Former President Jacob Zuma offered support to the secretary general of the ANC, Ace Magashule, advising him "to be resolved during these times."
Zuma was responding to a tweet that Magashule sent him to wish him a happy anniversary.
The former president was celebrating his 77th anniversary on Friday.
Magashule was a hot topic this week after the release of the book Gangster State: Unveiling Ace Magashule's Capture website, by journalist and author Pieter-Louis Myburgh.
It contains accusations that Magashule led the Free State with an iron fist.
After the release of the book, the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in the Free State announced that it would record copies of it. But the league eliminated their plans after ANC leaders took part in Luthuli House.
Protesters, some dresses with ANC t-shirts interrupted the launch of the book at Exclusive Books in Sandton on Tuesday.
The protesters sang and danced along the fourth floor of Sandton City, where the exclusive bookstore is located, after throwing some books in the store. Some sang "Ace, Ace, Ace …".
Magashule publicly denied any crime during its time as a leader of the Free State.
