The Chilean expert denies myths and prejudices about Artificial Intelligence Technology

Perhaps it is one of the most unknown areas of science by the majority. The closest approach to the topic was through science fiction films, where often the Artificial Intelligence (AI) escapes the planned control and attempts against humanity.

That is perhaps one of the greatest prejudices that exists about Artificial Intelligence. But what is true in all these myths?

John Atkinson He has a Doctorate in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Edinburgh, who spent much of his life studying this topic.

Atkinson was always anxious to know more about this area, so he then demolished and confirmed some myths created in the collective imagination.

Applied Artificial Intelligence in Businesses Does Reducing Employment?

Reality AI will automate less-routine tasks so you can reduce "traditional" jobs. However, this is not typical of AI, since the incorporation of conventional information technologies has generated the same impact for several years.

For example, the procedures that a client had to personally perform in a branch, now done electronically from the mobile phone or his home.

Could Artificial Intelligence try humans in the future?

Reality Although the clearly operational levels of an organization are out of reach. However, at an international strategic level it could eventually occur in some areas.

For example, in the defense industry, autonomous armament has already been conceived, which, of course, if not controlled, could affect not only a community but also humanity. Therefore, several international organizations are favoring and demanding that the use of AI in defense be prohibited.

Is artificial intelligence applied to transport like airplanes or buses a greater risk of accidents, than a man-operated drive?

Myth The use of AI for the autonomous driving of different types of vehicles is long-standing and, in general, there are many more benefits than the risks.

For example, in commercial airplanes, "autopilot" (GPS) flight modes have been used for years. Achieving autonomy both in flight and in takeoff / landing is only a matter of time.

In addition, a machine does not "get tired" when handling, it has perception information that a human controller does not have, can be "trained" with absolute respect to the laws, it can predict locations on the route in advance.

At some point, Artificial Intelligence could create feelings in robots?

Reality There are models of AI that make it possible that not only machines can be motivated based on their emotions, but also their intentions and beliefs about the "world" they perceive.

On the other hand, the incorporation of emotions and beliefs is vital for the practical interaction with humans and their adoption. For example, depending on the intentions, emotions and beliefs of a machine, a commercial requirement of a client could be satisfied, one way or another very different and thick.

Is there a possibility that future Artificial Intelligence will develop a chip that allows you to store memories that are chosen from memory (as shown in a Black Mirror chapter)?

Reality In aspects related to memory, there have been important advances both in understanding where it resides and in the electrochemical information that the neuronal circuits of our brain intervenes.

Extracting this information and transferring it to a "physical" device is not only feasible, but there are already organizations that are offering in the medium term these types of "services" even beyond the "death" of a person, where both Consciousness as memory could transfer to an "avatar" that represents post mortem.

Artificial Intelligence is full of a world of particularities and elements unknown to many.

This topic, like others like cybersecurity, the environment and innovation, are topics that are being addressed by different experts, both nationally and internationally, at the Public Innovation Meeting, which runs until Friday November 30 at the Naval Polytechnic Academy (APOLINAV) , in Valparaiso.

Workshops and conversations are free for all interested audiences. For more information on schedules and conferences, you can enter this link.
