DEurovision's double winner does not want to participate in CES this year. This was announced by the public station on Wednesday in Kiev. The national referendum showed how closely the spectacle ties and their organization with neighboring Russia are after years of military conflict. "On the part of the society this fact is acceptable and on the other hand causes indignation". The European Union of Broadcasting EBU, that lodges the CES, has confirmed the decision. The cancellation was regrettable, it is expected that Ukraine will join the competition again next year.
Several Ukrainian musicians have previously announced that they would not play for their country. On Saturday, singer Maruv (Anna Korsun) clearly won the national preliminary round. Politicians have criticized the 27-year-old and then past and planned actions in the neighboring country. It was followed by a public dispute and long negotiations with the public broadcaster, finally resigned at the beginning of the week to participate. She stated that she did not want to be exploited politically. The broadcaster accused her of failing to fulfill her role as "spokeswoman for public opinion in Ukraine".
"There is no victory at any price"
Maruv's decision was taken for a kind of domino effect: Shortly afterwards, the Freedom Jazz group, who had landed in second place, said they would not act. On Wednesday, the third place also said: "We do not need victory at any price. Our mission is to make people one with our music and not fight," announced the Kazka group on its Facebook page.
Kiev is from the annexation of the Crimean peninsula by the Russian army five years ago and the support of separatists in the east of the country by Moscow in the war with the neighbor. When the 2017 competition took place in Kiev, Russia was not present: the Ukrainians announced at that time, the Russian singer Julia Samoilova, who previously occurred in the Crimea, not to leave in the country.
The next CES will be presented in Tel Aviv from the 14th to the 18th of May. Russia is one of the most successful countries of CES – in 2004 and 2016, Russian artists repeated repeatedly the country's representatives, took the first places. The contract that Ukrainian musicians have to sign before the CES affirms, among other things, that they are not allowed to act in Russia for three months after the competition.
