Rohit Sharma lost his first match for the Indians of Mumbai after he was excluded from the clash against Kings XI Punjab on Wednesday (April 10) with a muscle spasm.
The 31-year-old shot out of a training session on the eve of the game and was replaced as the captain by Kieron Pollard. Mumbai hitter partner Siddhesh Lad was chosen for his IPL debut in the absence of Rohit.
"Rohit Sharma suffered a leg muscle spasm during training. Rohit recovered significantly in the last 24 hours. As a precautionary measure, Mumbai's management decided to rest for Rohit for a match," revealed the team's leadership in a statement.
This is the first game that Rohit missed a meeting for the Indians of Mumbai in the IPL since it was exchanged for the triple winners in 2011 of the now decadent Deccan Chargers. The last game on the bench in this tournament was against Chennai Super Kings on May 27, 2008.
Rohit played 165 successive IPL games [32 for Deccan Chargers and 133 for Mumbai Indians]. Its 133 consecutive matches to Mumbai are the second place of 134 Raina games for a single franchise [Chennai Super Kings].
