The Channel Islands?
Yes, a series of islands mainly British for French art, right next to Normandy. Jersey and Guernsey are the largest, and then there are Alderney, Sark and some smaller islands.
The islands do not belong to the United Kingdom and to the European Union, they are possessions of the British Crown. More than 150,000 people live there.
In addition to English, Jersey Jèrriais and Guernsey Guernésials speak, both variants of French spoken in Normandy.
What is there to experiment?
Beautiful coastal lines, shady avenues and an old world charm, Lonely Planet describes the Channel Islands. He is not really British, nor really French, but proudly independent.
A flow of warm waves offers pleasant temperatures, subtropical vegetation and many birds. The islands are especially popular among hikers, surfers and divers.
The Channel Islands are the only British territory occupied by Germany during the Second World War. There are several war museums and there are tunnels and bunkers of war.
The Others and Bergerac
In The Others, the horror movie with Nicole Kidman from 2001, moves a woman at the end of World War Two with her two children to a country house in Jersey.
Bergerac also played in Jersey, the British television series about detective Jim Bergerac. The series, which was recorded between 1981 and 1991, is still regularly repeated on the BBC.
Well, the islands are not necessarily cheap. It depends on where you want to go. Guernsey and Jersey are very touristy, there are very few hotels and prices are not very bad, especially during the low season. Some of the smaller islands are much more remote, more silent and more expensive.
Those who want to travel cheaply can save up to € 100 per day on the Channel Islands, the estimates of Lonely Planet. A bed at a hostel costs between 20 and 50 euros per night. Who wants a bit more comfort, needs 100 to 250 euros. A middle class hotel costs about 65 to 125 euros per person. Those who go for luxury must have more.
An outbound flight from Amsterdam to Guernsey for next spring may be booked for almost 290 euros (fly with flybe.com, a transfer, almost four hours of travel, back on April 28, on May 1, at through cheaptickets.nl).
What will cost a ticket through the Eelde airport is still unknown. The Sunair travel company will offer flights (with the Blue Islands airlines), every Sunday between April 28 and June 23, 2019.
