Upgrade to NVMe speeds of Samsung 970 EVO SSD faster than ever

If your PC or laptop supports NVMe fast-light storage, today is a good day to collect one of our favorite SSD drives. Amazon sell or Discovery Drive 500GB 970 EVO M.2 for $ 117. These $ 30 are cheaper than it was last week and $ 26 cheaper than the 500GB WD Black 3D, a rival with very little benefit of this capability.

Even so, sacrificing a bit of performance for a better price is a good deal, especially when you're talking about SSD drives this fast We review the Samsung 970 EVO in April and admire for affordable price and speed.

Writing speeds of this 500GB model slowed once the cache was maximized, but you should not find it unless you are moving large amounts of data. In our tests, slowness has taken place after copying about 20GB of a single 48GB file. If you plan to copy 48GB files all the time, maybe the WD Black at the highest price is a better deal. For all others, the Samsung 970 EVO should be more than fine.

The main feature of this unit is the fast NVMe interface that replaces the traditional SATA III protocol for data transfers. For an NVMe drive to work on your PC, however, you need a pretty modern motherboard that NVMe supports. In addition, some of the first motherboards compatible with NVMe would not allow to boot from an NVMe drive as it was cutting-edge technology at the time. In these days, a BIOS update should solve this problem for most people with older components. Please see our longer discussion on NVMe issues for more information.

If you can run an NVMe drive, Samsung assures that the read speeds of EVO 970 can reach up to 3,500 megabytes per second. Under our tests, it was more than 3,004 MBps, although it still looks awesome when you consider that the fast and always popular 860 EVO Samsung SATA SSD ends at an announced 550MBps. If you move a lot of data, upgrade to NVMe is worth it.
