Leclanché is commissioned by KONGSBERG with energy storage solutions for fast-growing electric and hybrid shipments

Yverdon, Switzerland, Kongsberg, Norway, November 12, 2018: Kongsberg Maritime, the world leader in marine technology, selected Leclanché, one of the world's leading storage companies, as a battery partner and provider of customized energy storage solutions for the shipping industry. The collaboration contributes to the new generation of hybrid energy solutions of KONGSBERG that establish new standards of efficiency in the design of autonomous and manned ships and significantly reduce the environmental impact.

Leclanché batteries will be an integral part of KONGBSERG hybrid solutions. As part of the association, Leclanché will handle one of the largest individual orders for boat battery systems to date, which include a total of nine ships with 45MWh of batteries. The systems are being built in Leclanché in Switzerland, with cells manufactured at the Willstätt site in Germany.

– The first joint project will be Yara Birkeland, the first in the world
autonomous and without emissions, built on behalf of YARA, one of the main fertilizer companies and provider of environmental solutions. Yara Birkeland will replace 40,000 trips per lorry per year, eliminating associated NOx and CO2 emissions. It will also improve road safety and reduce noise and dust emissions associated with truck rides in densely populated urban areas.

– The second project concerns the 5th Generation Green Grimaldi (GG5G) vessels. Grimaldi is one of the largest roll-on / roll-off operators (RoRo) and roll-off / roll-off ships (Ro-Pax). The hybrid propulsion system provided by Kongsberg includes Leclanché wave generators, frequency disks, energy management systems and battery systems. The GG5G will be the first of a new series of RoRo hybrid ships that consume fossil fuels at sea, while port batteries provide energy and maximum charge coverage.

The new partnership with KONGSBERG favors Leclanché's strategy of moving from being a pure cell manufacturer to being a vertically integrated provider of systems and addressing emerging markets, such as merchandising and floating transport. Leclanché invested early in the development of a marine battery system certified by DNV-GL and is the first battery supplier that fully complies with the current tight regulations of 2015. DNV GL is an international certification and certification body for ships based in Høvik, Norway .

Frode Kaland, EVP Supply Chain Kongsberg Maritime said: "Leclanché's ability to cover the entire value chain, from the development and production of lithium cells in Europe to complete ship-certified battery systems, together with our patented hybrid energy technology, places us as the sole provider of electrification solutions, resulting in lower operating costs. and allow environmental sustainability for all types of ships. "

Anil Srivastava, CEO of Leclanché said: "The partnership between Kongsberg Maritime, a leading provider of marine electrification and Leclanché solutions, has the potential for transformation since it offers low emission and emission solutions for the important and rapid growth of shipping. Leclanché's approach to transport is an integral part of our focus on fleet electrification. Maritime is the best one for our superior battery systems as well as for our collaborative approach to provide emission reduction solutions. We see a paradigm shift in the naval industry towards electric power. Partnerships with first-class companies like KONGSBERG once again demonstrate that Leclanché's time has come ".
