A planet on a diet

A commission of 30 leading scientists from the world recently developed a nutrition concept that will help those who lose weight and eat in a healthy way. Although many diets promise this, the emphasis is on all. Because the nutritional plan is adequate to feed in a sustainable and healthy way to more than 10 million people without destroying our planet. In 2050, approximately 10 billion people live on Earth. Current dietary methods are already reaching their limits, leaving deep scars on our planet. The EAT Lancet Nutrition, Planet and Health Commission has developed a nutritional approach that will allow anyone to serve healthy without destroying our planet. The results of the investigation were recently presented in the magazine "The Lancet".

What is behind the planetary diet?

The Commission carried out the first comprehensive scientific review to clarify what constitutes a healthy diet based on a sustainable food system and what measures can support and accelerate the transformation of this system. Based on these considerations, the so-called Planetary Diet arose.

Diet is more than food

According to the Commission, this diet brings together the latest knowledge about healthy eating by meeting the sustainability requirements that we must strive for. "A healthy diet should improve health and, in general, promote the state of full physical, mental and social well-being, not just the absence of disease," the researchers wrote in their summary report.

We eat too much meat, sugar, fat and refined grains

"Healthy eating has an optimal caloric intake and it's mostly a variety of plant foods," says nutritionists. Only small quantities must come from animal origin. In the same way, the levels of unsaturated fats, refined grains and sugars should be kept low. Even the well-processed dishes should not come on the table.

This is what looks like a sustainable and healthy diet plan

The following overview shows how the Commission considers that an optimal and sustainable diet should be linked. The overview refers to a daily caloric intake of 2500 calories, an average consumption in middle-aged men. The consumption of personal calories may have to be adjusted.

  • Starchy vegetables (for example, potatoes): 50 grams per day; It's equal to 39 calories

  • Red meat: 14 grams per day (about two fillets per month), equivalent to 30 calories
  • domestic poultry: 29 grams (approximately one per week) is equivalent to 62 calories
  • eggs: 13 grams per day (one egg every 4 to 5 days); It's equal to 19 calories
  • fish: 28 grams per day (one to two servings per week); 40 calories
  • vegetables: 75 grams per day; It corresponds to an average of 284 calories
  • walnuts: 50 grams per day; It corresponds to an average of 291 calories
  • Additives unsaturated fats: 40 grams per day, equivalent to 354 calories
  • Added saturated fats: 11.8 grams per day, equivalent to 96 calories
  • Sugar added: 31 grams per day, equivalent to 120 calories
