The cocktail that inspired a group of Chinese researchers to create a contraceptive for men Photo 1 of 6 | Science

O male contraception It has a promising future. Several methods pass the first stages of successful clinical examinations in order to reduce the load of contraception in women.

In that line, a group of Chinese researchers found inspiration for a new method of male contraception, nothing more and nothing less than the multi-colored cocktail called Galaxy.

It turns out that this is a combined alcoholic whose components form colored layers in the glass in which it is prepared, which resembles a galaxy in space. The researchers noted that this drink formed perfectly separated layers. However, when they shook or underwent heat, the layers broke and the components were mixed in one.

Thus, the idea of a contraceptive that works in the same way as the cocktail, but within the deferential vessels, which are the conduits through which the semen is transported from the testicles to the urethra, were born.

As detailed in the article published in ACS Nano , the results obtained by the team of Xiaolei Wang were positive in their tests in rats. Thus they created a contraceptive whose effect could be canceled with heat.

How does it work

Researchers sequentially injected four layers of different substances into the vas deferens of male rats. The first layer consists of hydrogel, a substance that acts as a physical barrier to prevent sperm passing.

Then they injected a layer of gold nanoparticles, which are radiant by infrared light radiation on them. The ethylenediaminotraacetic acid (EDTA) was injected, which decomposed the gel and killed the sperm and sealed the duct with another layer of gold nanoparticles.

In this way, the sperm not only prevents to advance through the conduits, but they are eliminated by the EDTA. But the interesting thing is that if you want to reverse the contraceptive process, you just have to heat up with infrared and the gold nanoparticles will do their job, mixing it with the rest of the layer and allowing the sperm passage again.

Now that their effectiveness has been demonstrated in rats, researchers hope to test their method in humans, as well as guarantee the safety of the compounds used.
