A research group, led by biochemist Mariano Barbacid, has achieved the complete disappearance of advanced cases of ADP (pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma). This is one of the most aggressive forms of pancreatic cancer. Thus, thanks to a complicated joint therapy it was eradicated.
Currently only 5% of patients survive with this type of cancer.
"The work team focused its initial research on eliminating the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and the protein kinase c-RAF in isolation, but the results were negative in both cases."
"It is for this reason that they decided to analyze whether a therapeutic effect could be induced if they were eliminated simultaneously, which showed that a significant percentage of high-grade tumors not only stopped growing, but in a few weeks it completely disappeared.", Explained CNIO (National Center for Oncology Research) in an official statement.
"As a result, combined elimination of EGFR and c-RAF only produces toxicities that consist of easily controllable dermatitis."
This therapy has been tested in immunodeficient mice with ten pancreatic cancer models. The result was that nine of these tumors stopped proliferating in the absence of EGFR and c-RAF.
This is the first time an advanced pancreatic cancer has been eliminated in an experimental model.
"I am very worried about giving false hopes. I want to make it clear that it will not be useful for people who currently have pancreatic cancer," said Mariano in a press conference in Madrid.
"The study opens a path of research to improve the prognosis of patients with pancreatic cancer, but is far from applicable in patients," said El País Enrique de Madaria, vice president of the Spanish Association of Pancreatology.
